Do the results of a presidential election need to be known on election night?

With the expanded allowance of absentee ballots across a variety of states many entities, including Trump, have warned that fully counting those ballots may take longer than we are accustomed to.

It is entirely possible that leads on election night may diminish or reverse as absentee ballots continue to be received/counted. Should post-election-night changes to an election’s results be allowed to happen? If it does happen how would it effect your view of the election’s legitimacy?
