How do you feel about people trying to use Ivermectin to treat COVID-19?

There have been reports of poisoing by the anti-parasite drug Ivermectin. Vaccine hesitant people have been using this drug because they believe that it is a safer and more effective alternative to vaccines. Sometimes this drug have been prescribed by unscrupulous tele-medicine companies, but there has also been a trend of people buying Ivermectin in formulations intended for pets and livestock. This has also created a shortage for farmers who might need these drugs for their own livestock.

People seem to be inspired to take this drug because of statements made by prominent conservative personalities: Senator Ron Jonson of Wisconsin has been promoting these drugs as COVID-19 therapy for months. A number of prime-time fox-news presenters, Tucker Carlson, Laura Ingram and Sean Hannity have repeatedly claimed that these drugs are effective against COVID-19. After testing positive for COVID-19 Milo Yiannopolos recently revealed that he had injected himself with Ivermectin intended for bovine use.

Most of the world’s health authorities have advised against use of Ivermectin outside of medical trials. The medical trials that did look into these drugs found that they were ineffective against COVID-19 because the side-effects vastly outweighed the purported benefits. The FDA tweeted: “You are not a horse. You are not a cow. Seriously, y’all. Stop it,” and linked to an article hilighting the dangers of abusing this drug.

Do you think something should be done about this and if so, what?
