As you remember on 8 of October a month before the 2020 election the FBI reported that it uncovered a plot to kidnap the Governor of Michigan Gretchen Whitmer. A total of 14 people were arrested.
6 people of those were charged with federal crimes and 2 plead guilty to avoid further charges in exchange for testimony against the others.
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A jury on Friday acquitted two men of all charges in a plot to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer but couldn’t reach verdicts against the two alleged leaders, a stunning defeat for the government after a weekslong trial that centered on a remarkable FBI sting operation just before the 2020 election.
The jury could not reach verdicts for Adam Fox and Barry Croft Jr., which means the government can put them on trial again.
“Obviously we’re disappointed with the outcome. We have two defendants that are awaiting trial and we’ll get back to work on that,” U.S. Attorney Andrew Birge said, declining further comment.
But defense lawyers portrayed the men as credulous weekend warriors prone to big, wild talk and often stoned on marijuana. They said agents and informants tricked and cajoled the men into targeting the governor.
The case has been plagued by allegations of the FBI creating the plot:
which seemed to allege that the number of informants and undercover employees was extremely disproportionate to the number of the indicted. The judge in the case refused to dismiss the case on the basis of entrapment but allowed the defense to argue that the impact of the FBI actions created the case. Ultimately succeeding in getting 2 not guilty verdicts and 2 hung juries.
What is your opinion of the trial? Do you agree with the jury?
What do you think about the argument of the defense alleging extreme FBI involvement in the creation of the plot?
What do you think about the two guilty pleas? Mistake?
