Youngkin was the big story in Virginia, but the state also elected its first Black woman lieutenant governor and its first Latino attorney general, both Republicans.

Republicans claimed Virginia’s governorship for the first time in more than a decade.

Mr. Youngkin had a slight edge with college-educated white voters, a group that favored Mr. Biden by 11 percentage points in last year’s VoteCast survey.

The survey also suggests that Latino voters favored Mr. Youngkin over Mr. McAuliffe, though the sample size of the group was much smaller than for white and Black voters.

In a state where Mr. Biden beat Mr. Trump by 10 percentage points, a majority of voters in Tuesday’s election disapproved of the current president’s performance. Nearly two-thirds of voters said the country is headed in the wrong direction.

Quote from President Joe Biden:

I think we’re going to win in Virginia…This is going to be a tight race….I don’t believe and I have not seen any evidence that whether or not I am doing well or poorly, whether or not I’ve got my agenda passed or not, is going to have any real impact on winning or losing.

Potential questions:

  1. Do you agree with the NYT predictions on the outcome of the Virginia election (Republican governor, lieutenant governor, and attorney general)?
  2. Do you like/dislike the election results?
  3. Do you see the election results as a reflection on President Biden or any other representative/politician or policy?
